Microsoft Windows 3.11
This was the Windows on my first computer, which was my basic word pad and solitaire machine. You could never get beyond the 256 color scheme, and although we tried, we could not get the networking to connect to the internet. Before this installation, we had to have MS-DOS on our system.Because back in those days,Windows was an add-on.Just an enhancement.

Windows 3.1 Release date: March 18, 1992 Unsupported as of December 31, 2001

System Requirements:a 286 CPU, 1MB RAM, 8MB free disk space, and diskette drive.

Probably closer to 20MB in size after installing the common utilities.

There are still a few places online to find information and programs for Windows 3.x.
In french, yet win3x.org is a start. In english, try:MDGX, Old Files, LightSpeed,

and you can even give Win 3.1 an XP theme with Calmira.

This installation of 3.11 took only 7 minutes! Not including the DOS install time.

You could run 3.11 with the base 640KB of memory, by typing 'win' at the command prompt. Or win/3 for enhanced mode.

There were 7 floppy disks, but the last 2 are mainly printer drivers.

There was no 'Start" button. You used the commands under 'File" in Program Manager.

What you see is the 'typical' install.Any add-on software would add another group. There is also an update to make the desktop look like Windows 95, called Calmira II . This gave you a start button, and the typical clock in the system tray look.Works great!
