My first viewing of Dr Who was re-runs on PBS when i was 14. One of my classmates at school , who did some very creative drawing, was talking about the show and i asked where he saw it. He was originally from Atlanta , where he first started watching the shows, but our local PBS was running half hour episodes monday through friday. By the time i got home from school, i nearly forgot about Dr Who yet i managed to view the final minutes of the show that day. It was a Tom Baker episode, probably from Terror of the Zygons, and all i saw was the 'climactic' ending and the closing credits(with the theme music). I was intrigued. Having grown up watching classic British TV shows, such as Monty Python, The Goodies, Benny Hill, Dr Who was a new realm for me. A few years later, the local PBS started airing the Dr Who series at 11 pm on saturday nights. These shows were perfect late night movies for me, which included popcorn. The best part was that they showed the series starting with the first doctor William Hartnell and continued on into the Sylvester McCoy episodes. It wasn't just half hour episodes, instead they showed an entire feature each week..sometimes edited into a feature and other times you had to watch the credits each half hour. And i didn't get to watch every single episode; i only saw a few with Hartnell, Troughton, and Pertwee. After that, they featured the complete series of the Tom Baker and Peter Davison eras. Then, after a few of the McCoy episodes, they stopped showing Dr Who because of budgeting. I didn't have a vcr (or DVR) then, so the series only lived on in my memory for a few more years.
Years later i discovered a video store at the mall that sold Dr Who on VHS (before the DVDs came out)
and i managed to buy 20 tapes; 19 are Tom Baker era and The Five Doctors special.
